One ball can change the planet
adidas and Common Goal team up for environmental project in Spain
In Madrid’s Barrio del Pilar, rising temperatures and unpredictable heavy rainfall are making it harder for youth to enjoy outdoor activities. To tackle this, the One Ball Can Change the Planet project will transform two existing football and futsal pitches into a vibrant, environmentally conscious hub for sport and learning.
The upgraded space will support play and serve as a cooling refuge during extreme weather. Through infrastructure improvements and sustainability focused education, the initiative will empower local youth and community to engage in climate conversation through the sport they love.
Climate adapted infrastructure:
The project is centred around the renovation of two pitches, enhanced with climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable features:
Water fountain to ensure safe and accessible hydration for players and spectators
Green areas with vegetation and a planter system to create natural shade and reduce heat stress
New bleachers made from environmentally friendly materials, with a removable shading structure to allow for cooling breaks

Education on environmental sustainability through sport:
Beyond the physical transformation, the project places a strong focus on climate education through football, helping young people connect local environmental challenges with global solutions.
Activities include:
- Football for the Environment sessions, where players learn about climate change while engaging in the sport
- Workshops and nature-based outings, designed to deepen environmental awareness and encourage practical action
These learning experiences aim to create a new generation of climate-conscious leaders, using football as a powerful tool for engagement.
Community management for long-term impact:
Sustainability is about how spaces are cared for. The project includes a clear emphasis on community-driven management and circular practices to ensure long-term impact.
Key features include:
- Recycling points for football equipment, allowing the donation and reuse of gear within the community
- A local stewardship model, encouraging residents to take part in maintaining and evolving the space
With the community at the centre, One Ball Can Change the Planet ensures that the benefits of the project continue to grow.
